Cells that express a protein called stromal derived factor-1 (SDF-1) are stained black. SDF-1 plays a critical role in the homing of stem cells and tumor cells to the bone marrow in breast and prostate cancers. The further study of SDF-1 and similar molecules that act as targets for circulating cancer stem cells may eventually improve our treatment of metastatic disease.
